Bed Bug Larve

January 14th, 2011 by Angela

Bed bugs hide in tight spaces, for example cracks in boards and bed frames, behind picture frames and walls, under mattresses, carpets, furniture and in beds. When observed close up, bed bugs have white, light-tan to a deep brown or burnt orange color. Others look reddish-brown, compacted, oval and wingless. The life span of bed bugs is different in species and they’re dependent on feeding from their hosts.  They intuitively seek shelter in dark cracks and they split up when interrupted from their colony. Bed bugs are known to be a rising dilemma inside all sorts of dwellings, including private residences, hotels, dormitories, cruise ships, barracks, and shelters.

Bed bugs originate from eggs. The egg’s size is around 1mm long and lived inside two to seven days. When the egg hatches, it becomes a bed bug larvae and recognized as a maggot. The maggot undergoes nymphal phases that will last from 32 to 45 days at which point it becomes mature. A mature bed bug takes close to seven months before it can lay its own eggs which are estimated to be between 300 to 500 eggs. Bed bugs grow from egg to adult via a procedure called: gradual metamorphosis. Gradual metamorphosis means that the last larval phase develops straightforwardly into an adult devoid of passing through a non-feeding pupal phase. There are five larval or nymphal stages, and apiece one needs a blood meal prior to molting into the next life cycle stage. Both adult male and female bed bugs feed on blood and take repeated blood meals for the duration of their lives. Females need blood for the development of eggs. Adult bed bugs are about a quarter inch long. Their body is very flat and they possess lengthy, trim legs and antennae. Immature bed bugs are acknowledged either as larvae or nymphs. They strongly resemble adults, but are lesser and less deeply pigmented. Over this form of reproduction, bed bugs can populate and infest different varieties of dwellings.

Eliminating bed bugs can above all be controlled by good sanitation and repetitive cleaning, for instance normal housecleaning and washing of bedding. As bedbugs are located around the world, travelers should also be attentive for signs of infestation of bed bugs in diverse places.
