In the last 30 years great advances have been made. If you are old enough you might remember or heard of individuals undergoing a rigid scope exam in the physicians clinic called a rigid sigmoidoscopy. sigmoidoscopy revealed only the bottom foot or so of the colon and rectum. Any polyps or colon lesions found at the time of colonoscopy can be painlessly biopsied, remove a small piece of the lesion, or removed. This assists in diagnosis and treatment of colon disease. Many conditions that stumped physicians for years are now readily diagnoses soon after the exam.
The exam is preformed with the patient sedated and comfortable throughout the exam. Indication for colonoscopy include the following, this is by no means a complete list.
Bright red rectal bleeding
Chronic diarrhea
Unexplained chronic abdominal pain
Change in bowel habits diarrhea or constipation
Unexplained anemia
Follow up for history of polyps
Colon cancer history in the family
Age 50 or greater without prior colonoscopy and then each 10 years thereafter
History of inflamatory bowel disease
