    Not vitamin E.

First of all, vitamin E oil can cause more acne; it’s comedogenic, meaning that it clogs pores. The last thing you want it another flare up.

Secondly, many studies have shown that it doesn’t really matter what you rub on a scar – it’s just the rubbing motion that helps break up the scar tissue. So a lot of people aren’t wrong when they say, “I rubbed vitamin E oil on my scar and it really helped!” They just don’t realize that they could have been using anything.

Of course, you don’t have scar tissue (e.g. a big knot of uneven tissue). You have discoloration, and that’s what you need to address.

The number one thing to improve both color and texture of skin – this covers those purple spots as well as brown sun discoloration, etc. – is acid. You can choose from many that you’ll find in the drugstore. There’s glycolic acid, alpha-hydroxy acid, retinol, and vitamin C. The first three work the best – vitamin C has been shown to work well in labs, but it’s very unstable and by the time it hits the shelves of your local store it’s often useless.

Neutrogena makes a great retinol moisturizer for daytime, and RoC has some retinol lines for nighttime that have received good reviews in beauty magazines.

If you want to spend a little more money, and get the ball rolling a little faster, go to a doctor and get a prescription for Retin-A. It’s just a stronger acid and therefore works better. A small tube is about $50, but you use very little each night.

Be sure to wear sunblock; ultraviolet light can worsen discolorations.

(By the way, these scars come from cysts deep down inside your skin, whereas a cut is on the surface, and this is part of why they aren’t disappearing as fast!)
