Hearing Aids have existed for many, many years. The first hearing devices were just conical devices that you held up to your ear so that a mortal could talk into them. This created a funnel of sound into the wearer’s ear. Fortunately, tremendous advances in technology make today’s hearing aids much more effective. So, what makes today’s hearing aids work the way they do?
Hearing aids use small microphones to make a soft sound louder. The microphone is what does the trick. The microphone receives sounds, converts them to digital or electronic signals, and then sends them back out as sounds via a speaker. The person’s hearing loss is adjusted for by the microphone as well as the environment they are in. The environment the wearer is in depends on the level of noise they usually have around them. Are the noises around you usually those with frequencies that are high? If so, do you need to hear them? Is your environment mostly conversational? All these questions will help the audiologist adjust the settings on your hearing aid. This is only part of the answer to how do hearing aids work.
There are three basic types of technology that receive and convert the signals in hearing aids these days. The least advanced is the analog adjustable hearing aid, and it costs less than the other two types. The audiologist can make adjustments to the hearing aid volume as well as make other minor tweaks. The product is then custom prefabricated for you in a factory. You can control the volume, or it will be controlled automatically.
Analog programmable circuitry is found in another type of hearing aids. These have a computer which is programmable and they work a tiny superior than regular analog. Based on different situations, an audiologist can set different transmission and sound capture settings. A remote control can be used by the wearer to choose among different programs.
The most pricey and most technologically advanced hearing aids make use of digital programmability. Engineers tried for years and years to make digital models tiny enough to not be impractical. Today, that is no longer a problem.
So, how do these digital hearing aids work? They make use of DSP (Digital Sound Processing). DSP analyzes and process sound before the amplification process. Billions of calculations are done by the computer to make sure that sound settings are correct. This digital data is then converted into sound and sent on to the ear. The digital hearing aid also has the ability of detecting and eliminating feedback by identifying its frequencies. There is very tiny adjustment necessary by a wearer of digital hearing aids.
