How to Get That Great Summer Skin

March 4th, 2011 by Angela

Summer is the time to go out, bask in the golden sunshine , and have fun with friends and family at the beach. Unfortunately , it is also the time when acne are most likely to break out in the most unexpected places . Don’t let a couple of zits spoil your summer fun. Here are a few handy tips to keep your skin clear during summer .

1.  Control Your Summer Oil

The humid summer heat can near your oild glands to work overtime . This in turn makes pimple breakouts more likely to occur. To keep oil and acne at bay , wash your face with a foaming cleanser when you wake up and before you go to sleep . For really oily skin , use an alcohol-free astringent on your problem spots after washing your face . You can also pamper yourself to an oil-absorbing facial mask once a week to get rid of all the excess oil.

Like your skin, the scalp also tends to get more oily during summer. That is why summer hair can be especially oily and dirty . This in turn can lead to acne on your face and back, which are in constant contact with your hair. To prevent this, you should shampoo your hair at least each other day.

2. Use Oil-Free Moisturizer

You don’t need to lather up on moisturizer during summer as you do during colder months. Use a light moisturizer that is oil-free to keep to keep oil and blemishes at a minimum. Also look for non-comedogenic moisturizers that won’t clog your pores .

3.  Wear Light, Breathable Clothes

One of the irritating things about summer is that acne can show up in the most unusual places, like your arm, neck, or even your thighs. This happens when your skin is really heated up and then gets frequently rubbed in with your clothes. To prevent this from happening, select light, breathable fabrics for your summer apparel . This not only keeps locational acne at bay but also helps your body cool down.

4.  Never Go Out Without Sunscreen

A good, bronzed, tan might look lovely, but inflamed acne does not. Never go out of the home without an oil-free, non-comedogenic, waterproof sunscreen that has at least SPF 15. Use sunscreen even when it’s cloudy outside. It’s also a good theory to bring a nice, wide-brimmed hat when you go to the beach.

6.  Check Your Skin Products for Contraindications Against the Sun

A lot of people make the mistake of using skin products without checking if they can be used while they’re out frolicking in the sun. Acne treatments like retinoic acid, alpha hydroxyl acids, salicylic acid, benzoyl peroxide, and antibiotics like tetracycline, minocycline, doxycycline, and accutan can harm your skin if you use them while your skin is exposed to the sun . Check the labels your acne products if they’re okay to use with sun exposure . You might also want to look into acne treatment alternatives that are innocuous to use even if you’re under the sun . These include oral treatments like hormones or vitamins for acne.
