How To Protect Your Baby From A Yeast Infection

June 27th, 2011 by Angela

Isn’t it annoying? If your baby is a bit grizzly and has a pimply rash on its bottom that just won’t go away or it has white spots in its mouth. Sorry, but these are common symptoms of a baby yeast infection.

What are the ways that they can get a baby yeast infection?

Here are the four most common ways for a baby to get a yeast infection;

1) Via the birth canal; If Mother has a yeast infection in her urinary tract then there is a good chance that baby will pick it up as it is going through the birth canal.

2) During breastfeeding;
If Mother has a Candida outbreak then it is doable that she will transmit the infection to baby while feeding. Baby can also pass the infection back to Mother this way.

3) Hygiene;
One of the great things about modern diapers is that they are designed to be leakproof. It is this feature that means that parents often tend to leave diapers on for longer than they should – I know that I did!. Unfortunately the damp, warm environment created is best for the fungi to thrive in.

When changing the diapers make sure that you wipe downwards ie towards her bottom – where possible!

4) Medication;
There are loads of kids who have to take antibiotics, some from the time that they are born. Unfortunately these are a ‘neccesary evil’ and will only be prescribed if totally essential. They do come with their own set of minor side effects, one of which is that baby might become more susceptible to a baby yeast infection. If your baby does need to go on antibiotics then ask your health care bourgeois about a specialist infant probiotic.

Mothers take heed too! Many of you will also be on antibiotics after giving birth which will make you very prone to a yeast infection.

Not each rash is a baby yeast infection, but if baby has a rash that does not respond swiftly to treatment, spreads over the genitals and onto the lower tummy and has white spots like small blisters, then it is a good chance that Candida is the culprit.

If there are any signs of white spots in the mouth or a rash that doesn’t clear then baby need to been seen by a medical professional.

What then?

Your physician will be ready to tell you immediately whether your baby has a baby yeast infection or not. He might take a small sample of the skin – it is just a wee scrape, baby won’t even feel it! – and send it off to the lab for testing. If this comes back positive he will probably prescribe an anti-fungal medicine.

Things that you can do to relieve your baby yeast infection symptoms
There are many yeast infection natural remedies for the relief of baby yeast infection symptoms, from the use of tea tree oil (very diluted – 1 drop to 2 litres of water), to colloidal silver, to cinnamon oil, yoghurt or cider vinegar.

Aloe gel or a cool wet chamomile tea bag pressed to the area might also relieve the symptoms. For more natural remedies and how to use them see Yeast Infection Natural Remedies

Remember, one of the best ways to prevent these baby yeast infection symptoms is to change her diaper regularly, the longer she stays in a wet diaper, the more the fungi like it.

If you or baby do end up with a yeast infection please make sure that you get treatment and that the infection is absolutely wiped out before stopping any therapy. A tiny effort here might well save you a load of trouble in the furure.
