Immune System and Inflammation

July 18th, 2011 by Angela

Inflammation is a pain.  Actually, it’s a process by which the body’s immune systems   protect us from infection and alien substances like viruses, toxins and bacteria .  However , in auto immune diseases, the immune system inappropriately sets off inflammation when there are no foreign substances to fight off and creates ruin to its own cells   The body attacks normal tissues as if they are  diseased or somehow abnormal . When inflammation happens , chemicals from the body’s white blood cells are loosened into the blood or affected tissues for the purpose of ridding the body of alien toxins . These new chemicals increases the flow of blood to the close by area and can cause swelling, warmth and redness . Sadly , the inflammatory process might stimulate nerves and result in significant pain.

Arthritis is a well known condition that is about joint inflammation . Some, but not all, types of arthritis are the fallout from wrongful inflammation.  Some types of inflammatory arthritis  include:rheumatoid arthritis, Shoulder tendinitis or bursitis and Gout .

While you often won’t have them all , the basic symptoms of inflammation are Redness, a swollen joint that is warm to the touch,  pain and stiffness in the joint and a loss of joint function.   Also , Inflammation might as well be connected with general “flu-like” symptoms including – feeling chilled or feverishness tiredsness and a loss of energy, headaches, deficient of appetite and muscle stiffness.

While the original anguish created because of inflammation can seem lousy enough, the extra cells and fluid – in the long term harmful the cartilage (cushions at the end of bones) and joint lining.  Inflammation can also be a problem for organs.   The type of symptoms depends on which organs are affected .

  • Heart Inflammation (myocarditis) might cause shortness of breath or leg swelling
  • Inflammation of the small tubes that move oxygen to the lungs might trigger an asthma episode
  • Inflamed Kidneys (nephritis) can cause high blood pressure or kidney failure
  • An inflamed massive intestine (colitis) can result in cramps and diarrhea.

Pain might not be an obvious symptom of the inflammatory disease , because many organs do not have a lot of pain-sensitive nerves.

There are different treatment options for inflammatory diseases , but as a rule , the medical community will depend on prescription anti-inflammatories, pain medication, rest, exercise, and surgery to correct joint damage.

The objectives of treating inflammation are to:

  • Avoid or alter activities that aggravate pain
  • Ease pain with analgesics (pain- relief medications ) and anti-inflammatory drugs
  • Maintain joint mobility and muscle strength through physical therapy
  • Decrease stress on the joints with braces, splints or canes as necessary

What is missing are the preventative ideas or self help steps that can essentially support your body by boosting your antioxidant levels , improving your diet , reducing stress in your life and neutralizing each day toxins – because they truly are everywhere.  Antioxidants will aid your body to fight toxins and in particular the family of antioxidants known as Betalains found in the wellness drink Nopalea are particularly well suited as natural inflammation fighters.
