Perfectionism Might Contribute to your Food Struggle

January 12th, 2011 by Angela

For several years  I was living with the monster of perfectionism. I really didn’t know  that this issue was not an integral part of my personality, but instead a dangerous way of living that could destroy my well being. I in no way supposed that perfectionism was among the many key factors that i could not get rid of my binging and purging.

In the world of a perfectionist “sufficient” is unfathomable. According to perfectionist there could be certainly no such consideration as a good enough relationship, a sufficient house, a well enough weight, a sufficient grade, a sufficiently good dinner celebration or a sufficient performance. Each part has to be perfect or a perfectionist will hear none of it.This is a extremely unhealthy lifestyle:

To begin with “perfection” is unable to exist. Almost everybody presents a distinctive “best” and what appears best for me will not be perfect for you in anyway. Next, pursuing faultlessness can rob an individual of peace of mind, human relationships and countless wonderful things and encounters which doesn’t fit into your “perfect” box.

So if you are reaching to obtain a ideally suited diet program, you might never be content with anything short of starvation. If you are merely happy with the perfect exercise, you are likely to rather do nothing at all. If you can’t fit into your number two bluejeans, you might rather stay home, watch tv, consume and feel hopeless.

Believe me, I have been there, and it’s not a way to live. I discovered along the way, after fighting intake disorders and food addiction for quit some time, that “consistency” is crucial in finding victory over a food battle. At certain point I realized that it wasn’t so important exactly how I did specific things, but instead that I got it done and I kept doing it that smashed the back of intake disorders.

I needed to come to a decision that my figure was “good enough” just the way it was (yes with excess weight)  to take care of it very well and have some fun.

I needed to make a decision that maintaining a healthy diet and losing excess weight tiny by tiny was “adequate”

I had to make the decision that visiting the gym a handful of times per week and pacing myself was “sufficient”

I had to make peace with the easy fact that I am going to slip-up, yet that making faults was still “adequate”?

Finally I came to the shocking conclusion that pursuing perfection will keep me away from consistency forever. The two can not co-excist. So if I really planned to break free from intake disorders, I had to forget about the theory of perfection, and learn how to tolerate “good enough”.

If you are a Christian you could already have purchased into the lie that perfection equals holiness. This is far from the truth.

God requiresHoliness and this can be translated as a quest for excellence, which is also in some instances translated as perfection. However, there is a significant distinction: The neutral of Holiness is always to please God and to become more like Him. This neutral brings forth Love, Peace, Joy and each other part of the Fruit of the Spirit within our lives. This quest will finish in heaven, and it brings long-term change in us on this earth. Also: Holiness can simply be performed through the power of the Holy Spirit in us. We’re not ready to do it ourselves.

In the Pursuit of Perfection the goal is primarily amusing ourselves and impressing others. This motion brings forth obsession, neurosis and stress in our lives. Likewise: Perfection is something we strive for in our own power, which is at best restricted and flawed, therefore the outcome is unclear and the actual neutral out of the question.

So, you might try to do each tiny thing as close to perfect as humanly doable and still be far from Holy.

In my course for women battling with food related issues, I devote a whole week explaining how perfectionism links to food addiction. I also speak truthfully about my own fight in this area and share guidelines to help you break free from seeking a thing that doesn’t exist.

I motivate ladies to take a year, eliminate perfectionism, alternative it with consistency, and watch the difference it could bring to their lives.
