Question: Ramadan: Is it haram to get this….?
I have several acne scars on my face. And one side of my face is all read because of this. I am considering getting a treatment called “dermabrasion” which does scar removal along with chemical peels and blue light therapy. What it does it remove a layer of skin and makes skin smooth and removes the scars.
Would this be considered haram because it’s for cosmetic purposes? I really don’t want to live with scars all my life and it ruin my self esteem. Thank you
@Sara: Thanks a lot for rubbing salt in my wounds and making my self esteen worse. Why bother answering if you’re not going to help? seriously…
@Reem: Thank you. I did go to a dermatologist and she told me that I have 2 options. I can either take Accutane for 4-5 months or I can get blue light therapy. I don’t know which one to use. Accutane is a very strong anti- biotic but I have heard that after you use it, you don’t get any acne for your whole life.

I dont know of anything in Quran or Hadith that states that a procedure like this would be haram and honestly i cant see why it would be. Modern medicine and technology when used for a good purpose is a blessing to mankind. This procedure is not just to make you look better, but if your face is red because of the acne then it might make your skin feel superior as well. Good luck

its not haram you are not altering your face features

  2. wazgud :::>★ {shooting star} says:

if you can afford it, i don’t think it’s haram b/c it’s just like intensive exfoliation

you’re not ruining the shape of your face or God-given features, right?

It would be best if you used more natural methods…i’m not so sure about this issue

  3. Marta says:

    Salam alaykum,

It is absolutely not haram. Only this kind of actions which change your body shape, size, looking, colour etc (changing the organism features) are forbidden. What’s more, if your intention is to be beautiful for your husband, it is even highly recommended!

I asked recently about whitening the teeth, and I got a reply from reliable source that it is halal. Explanation was the same as I told you above – with intention to be beautiful for your husband (not to use this beauty for doing haram things) it is allowed.

So, as far as this kind of “operation” will not affect your health, you can feel free to do this. And Allah wa ta’ala knows the best.

Salam alaykum wa rahmatuh allah wa barakatuh

I used to have several scars on my chest and I applied a paste of turmeric, gram flour and lemon juice on it before I went to bed. The scars completely disappeared in one month. Just a tip =)

The best way to treat acne scars is to go to a dermatologist obviously. This is because at the skin care centre, your skin would be put for testing and the real cause of the not-proper healing could be found, and the dermatologist would also be able to find the type of acne scar that you have. This is actually not so known to everyone, that there are actually many different types of acne scars, and each one of them have its own different method of curing or removal. Besides just looking at the type of scar, your age, tolerance for medications and therapies, physical health and medical history would also be taken into consideration, because most of the acne scar medications are pretty strong, and can have side effects if applied on wrong skin which do not have the tolerance power or even the immunity to protect against the side effect caused by the medications.

-It is not Har’am, as long as your intention is clear. Acne scars are more distracting than acne, and I can understand that no-one can live with them eternally. I am sure Allah (Swt) focuses more on piety than how we look and what we do to ourselves externally.

-The dermatologists prescribe Accutane for relentless acne conditions and i have heard it is a disappointment due to major side effects such as severe headaches and painful joints. Accutane will cure Acne, but i doubt it will heal the acne scars. So it is best to stick with dermabrasion.

It’s not haram to do something that will improve your self-image and self-esteem.

EDIT: I do not recommend Accutane except for last resort.

i agree with Wazgud. its not like a nose job or something, u arent changing the way that Allah created your face… youre just “fixing” something that troubles you, and i dont think there is anything wrong with that as far as quran/sunnah goes. its like getting into a bad accident and losing an arm. . do you say , oh , its what Allah decreed, and throw the arm in the medical waste bin, or do you say modern medicine will allow me to have my arm back, please do the surgery asap.. ? yep..thats what i thought.

Before going ahead, be properly diagnosed by a dermatologist and the appropriate treatment can be selected.
Make sure any treatment that you may decide to use is done by a trained professional and the correct type of laser therapy is used for the ance scars.
Treatment for scarring and acne is not Makrooh.
Makrook meaning not liked or favoured action which is nearer to Haraam.

I dont see why it should be haram. I have had microdermabrasion done. I’m thinking this is the same thing its just called microdermabrasion in UK. And previous to that I took Roaccutane(Accutane) again called slightly different name. That was a great great success. I think Roaccutane saved my face. The acne hasnt come back either.
