Shakira’s Rumored Hip Replacement

September 18th, 2011 by Angela

It is popular knowledge  that Shakira’s “hips don’t lie”, but it also seems like the Colombian pop star’s hips do cry.  During February of last year Shakira – or Shakira Isabel Mebarak Ripoll – checked into the UCLA Medical Center to receive a full hip replacement surgery. Shakira fans barely missed a beat. The week before her surgery Dr. Conrad Murray consoled fans that the dancer will see a 97% enhancement in movement after recovery.  Even with the current DePuy hip recall, hip replacement surgery remains common practice and we can anticipate to see Shakira shake it like she always has for years to come.

In her best-known performance of the song “Hips Don’t Lie”, Shakira was joined by Haitian singer and raper Wyclef Jean. Shakira’s dancing and singing captured the world’s attention . She has since become a pop legend and performed at major international venues, such as the World Cup this past July. Shakira has worked hard to bolster  her independent singing career, but the world seems more taken by her hips than her vocal cords. Shakira’s style of dance is actually quite unique. She combines Latin dance with traditional belly dancing, producing something that is all her own. It is sexy, stylish and wildly popular. She has, in effect, prefabricated belly dancing mainstream; girls are asking their parents for lessons, and dance professionals are touting it as the best new exercise routine. You might even see a DePuy hip recall lawyer doing some ‘hips don’t lie’ dance moves considering all the work they have been finding from the DePuy hip recall.

The phrase ‘hips don’t lie’, in relation to hip replacement surgery and accomplished pop dancers is no stranger to pop news.  The news buzzed with the headline that Nandana Sen would be needing a hip replacement surgery after suffering a hip injury while filming some outrageous dance sequences in Prince. Sen, age 43, is a favourite Indian actress with over 19 films to her credit. During the filming of Prince she remarked: “I don’t want the shooting to suffer. But I’m suffering. Shakira was right. Hips don’t lie.” And, talking of Prince, the legendary star himself has also produced quite a buzz around hip replacement surgery. In 2008 it was released that he was suffering from debilitating hip pain caused from all the years of aggressive dancing. It was rumored that he was to undergo a secret surgery. Then, in 2009, the Huffington Post reported that Prince was going to withstand the pain and eschew a hip replacement. Apparently Prince is a Jehova’s Witness and, according to his faith, can't receive a blood transfusion – a necessary element in hip replacement surgery.

The list of famous people with hip replacements is actually quite large, from former Presidents Reagan and Bush, to Eddie Van Halen, Pavarotti, Ray Charles, and Mick Mars of Motley Crue. In the unlikely case that any of these celebrities were implanted with a recalled hip, we can anticipate that they will use the best hip recall lawyers available.
