June 3rd, 2011When someone mentions the words “skin tags”, do you wonder what are skin tags? Whatever questions you might have entertained about are about to be answered. A skin attach refers to that small growth of tissue that just out from a portion of skin on one’s body. It is often flesh-toned, however there are instances wherein it might be a few shades darker than the skin surrounding it. These growths are often found in areas prone to contact with skin (as in skinfolds) or with fabrics and other materials. There might be more than just one skin attach present on one’s body, but since they don’t present a hazard to a person’s health, these could generally be ignored.
Skin tags are benign growths, and the only accompanying symptom of this condition is the presence of little stalks of flesh on the surface of the skin. These growths are most often found under the armpits, in the groin area, the skin underneath the breasts, or sometimes, on a person’s eyelids. However, if they appear on areas that are usually visible to other people, such as on the face or neck, people are often plagued by self-esteem issues, which is why many have these tags removed.
There are several ways to get rid of skin tags. Some methods require anesthesia, even though most don’t. Small skin tags generally have no need for anesthesia, and some people don’t even go the physician or to hospitals to get them removed.
People who opt for surgery are usually presented with two choices: cauterization (which is electrically burning the growths off), or cryotherapy (which involves utilizing liquid nitrogen to freeze the tags, and afterwards they drop off by themselves). These methods call for the use of anesthesia, and as such, its side effects include skin irritations like redness, dryness, or peeling. Aside from skin irritations, people also keep in mind how much it might cost to undergo surgery, hence more and more people try the more inexpensive home remedies instead.
