The Cholesterol Scam and Drugs That Do Not Work

August 10th, 2010 by Angela

Producers of Zetia and Vytorin recently reported that their heavily advertised cholesterol lowering drugs are failing to slow  the progress of fatty plaque in arterial blood vessels. It demonstrated it might actually promote plaque development. This story was in the form of a press release not a medical related or professional journal. The media release was very late after the findings in the study were actually uncovered.

The delay could have be do to the fact that they did not want to slow the $5 billion in income they received in 2007.. There was a difference of nearly a year between the findings and the press release.

This news was just the first in a series of reports that makes one wonder.. These drugs do not prevent heart disease however the American Heart Association released their own press release in support of these two drugs. I was confused by this and I am sure most people would speculate why an association intended to prevent cardiovascular disease would help support costly drugs that do not work. According to an report in the New York Times it was announced that the American Heart Association gets two million a year from the Merck/Schering-Plough Pharmaceuticals, the group that markets Vytorin. Vytorin by the way is a combination of Zocor and Zetia.

This drug failure and others is spurring debate about the role of cholesterol in heart disease. Their are many physicians that think cholesterol has tiny or nothing to do with heart disease and others who are sure it is a great risk factor. Regardless of which side you concur with, cholesterol is not a cause of heart disease but merely a doable symptom. Vytorin and the other drugs are developed to alter the symptom, not do a single thing for the health issue itself. It was announced as far back as 1977 in the American Journal of Epidemiology 105: 281-9 that cholesterol was a very weak indicator at best of heart problems risk. 50 % the people who have heart attacks have normal cholesterol.

So what causes coronary disease? They are still studying and will continue to do so. At this moment there are a variety of factors including prediabetes and overweight which results from an excess intake of refined sugars, processed sugar like carbohydrates and trans fats. This type of diet elevates blood sugar, insulin and yes cholesterol too.

This is all bad enough but look at these facts.. Average cholesterol is now lower than in 1960 because of all the billions of dollars spent on cholesterol lowering drugs. And now two thirds of Americans are overweight which is the number one risk element for diabetes and heart problems. Not only that there is more diabetes and coronary disease now than in 1960 by a wide margin. Cholesterol is not the culprit it is pure and easy a matter of what we eat. And we are not intake right. The answer is not prescription drugs, the answer is finding natural ways to lower cholesterol.
