what is the best way to treat discoloration(caused by acne)and acne scars in a brown skinned hispanic male?
April 2nd, 2011Question: what is the best way to treat discoloration(caused by acne)and acne scars in a brown skinned hispanic male?
I am a 20 year old hispanic male who has had a bad usage of picking at my acne (mainly premature acne), therefore causing brown and dark discoloration and leaving several small to severe scars on my face. I know the best cure for a scar is time, but i’m young and feel my self confidence is taking a battering due to constant scarring on my face. I am getting out of the usage of touching my face and I am treating the acne with doxycycline and ziana gel. My dermatologist advocates doing a chemical peel that will cost around 300 dollars, I want to do it but am also looking for other options.
ps. the majority of my scars are not deep and disappear into my skin within 2 to 3 months, they mostly just make brown spots on my slightly lighter skin
PLEASE HELP!
any advice or suggestions or even any individualized experiences would be Greatly Appreciated!!
Thank you

Something with alpha hydroxy acid would help. Drink Green Tea, take vitamins and zinc.

. I heard Mederma is good, but it wouldn’t hurt to try those treatments for older women, is it? I mean they have stuff for discoloration. Ask your derma, if you could use one of those.
I’m pretty sure that Neutrogena has those chemical peel stuff or whatever.
You better Google.
Well, I’m very pale and get pink scarring. So, I’m not sure how it’ll work on darker skin, but I use a simple homemade remedy.
1 tsp. nutmeg mixed with 1 tsp lemon juice (You can use more. Just make sure it’s balanced.)
Massage it onto your face and keep it on for about 15-20 minutes a day for a couple of days every week.
I saw the scars fade(at this point, it was only a tiny amount. but still noticeable) by just the second use of it.
I hope this will help.
It’s all about AHA.
Neutrogena Healthy Skin with Alpha Hydroxy Acid (AHA) is excellent for your skin. The AHA gently takes off the dead skin layers (over time, usually you can see results in a week or two). If you use this, you shouldn’t exfoliate with a sponge or scrub… the AHA is enough.
If you want pure AHA, go to http://www.acne.org and get the one on sale there. It’s a great product that I use every day and it has evened my skin tone, gotten rid of my scarring, made my skin softer and prevented more zits. (the Neutrogena is great too and works the same but the one online is cheaper and doesn’t have sunblock (so you can use it at night too).
Two things to know about AHA:
1. It stings and burns when you first apply it. Don’t give up though! It lasts about 10-15 minutes after application and your skin gets used to it within a week. Don’t put it near your eyelids.
2. It makes your skin more sensitive to sunlight. I wear oil-free sunblock during the day, at night I don’t worry about it.
PS: The other’s answers about diet and vitamins are great answers. I’m just suggesting a topical product that worked for me.
