Treat acne. Moisturiser creates a barrier on top of your skin and you want the acne treatment to penetrate your pores to kill the p.acnes bacteria or exfoliate inside your pores, which it cannot do if it is blocked by moisturiser.
The only over the counter (OTC) treatment that can truly penetrate your pores to kill the p.acnes bacteria is benzoyl peroxide (BP) gel or cream (concentrations of 2.5% are best as they effectively kill bacteria with less chance of irritating skin that more concentrated formulations like 5% or 10% BP). The only OTC treatment that can exfoliate inside your pores is salicylic acid (SA). SA only works in an acid base with a pH of between 3 and 4. Paula’s Choice 2% BHA Liquid meets the criteria for a properly formulated SA product.
Tea tree oil is potentially irritating to skin and can kill only surface bacteria, not the bacteria deep in the skin where spots form. Try it by all means, but if it doesn’t work I strongly recommend you get the book Breaking Out by Lydia Preston and follow the advice in it.
